The Olympics are almost upon us, and it looks like it’s going to be the biggest event of the year- beating both the Diamond Jubilee and the Mayan end of the world prophecy. Everyone wants to be a part of it, and by now you’ve probably got your tickets lined up for such iconic events as badminton, equestrian dressage and water polo. So the big question is, where are you going to stay between watching these athletes achieve great things for their country and then going to the pub afterwards?
There are plenty of options. One possibility is to book a hotel in London for the Olympics, although if you could have booked them around the end of June 2005 you would probably get a better price. The hotels have been hiking their prices right up, with most places 315% more expensive than they usually are. Labour MP Tessa Jowell has even begun to ask questions during Parliament, saying “the Government should act to address this scandal of extortionate price rises in London hotels during the Olympic and Paralympic Games”.
Another alternative is to skip the hotels altogether, and find a house to live in for the duration of the events. All over London plenty of people are getting ready to temporarily move out of their home to provide Olympic accommodation to incoming tourists. The prices of these homes will vary wildly, but at prices comparable to most hotels you will instead get an entire house or flat for you and your family, making for a generally more pleasant stay.
This approach does bring plenty of other advantages with it- While restaurants and hotels may be hiking their prices up, supermarkets will be staying pretty consistent, so by sticking with self-catered accommodation you’ll be saving a heap of money.
Okay, so there might not be a mint on your pillow when you arrive, but overall you’ll find it a much more homey experience.
