Tips for Getting a Hiking Pass
Getting a hiking pass is imperative before hitting the trails in certain areas. This is something many people do not think about until the last minute, however. A lot of hikers spend months planning a backpacking trip and getting all the right gear, only to show up at the trailhead and realize they cannot get the pass they need.
To avoid this mistake, simply pick up the phone and call the ranger office in the area you are traveling to. They will let you know the steps you have to take to get the pass. The process is usually very simple. The most important key is to call in advance, for the simple fact that some areas require you to have it well before you actually are set to hike. This is particularly true on big mountains that have just a few routes and do not have enough camping space for tons of climbers.
So assuming you get the pass, now it is time to think about equipment. Obviously it will vary depending on what location you are traveling to. The truth is, you do not need nearly as much equipment as some people claim. In fact, most of the equipment that is sold on the internet is totally useless, and is more for collectors rather than real backpackers.
The most important tip is to pack as little as possible. This is particularly true if you are camping a long ways from the trailhead, and therefore have a lot of miles to cover before you setup camp. The last thing you want to do is lug an 80 pound pack 20 miles in the backcountry.
The essentials
No matter where you are going, you will need a sleeping bag, a pack, and a tent. You will spend more on these items than anything else anyway, so you want to make sure you get quality equipment. Sure, it would be nice to get a good tent for 25, but the last thing you want. Besides these, the equipment you get is really dependent on when and where you are going. is rain leaking on you in the middle of the night. Just do not forget the hiking pass!
