The Coasts of Sicily

A fact not sufficiently appreciated by most holidaymakers is the considerable height of all inland parts of Sicily Island. There are no low lying plains or valleys in the middle of the island. The mountainous four fifths of the island is largely table land. Towns like Caltanissetta, Corleone, Piazza Armerina and Caltagirone are all table land towns, surrounded by ranges of hills and mountains. Climatically, these places are continental as compared with Palermo and Catania, with a drier, keener air, and sharp differences in temperature between night and day.

The south coast of Sicily is mainly rocky and precipitous, with cliffs varying between thirty and sixty feet in height. There are no mountains of any eminence behind them, so that the view of the island from this side is not impressive. A feature of this coast is the sandbanks which thinly border it. Between Gela and Scoglitti and to the east of Selinunte there are also sand-hills. As there are no natural harbours along this unbroken coast, which very much resembles that of the western Adriatic, it was absolutely impracticable during a southerly gale until the recent construction of the artificial ports of Licata, Porto Empedocle and Sciacca.

South of Catania, the coast, at first flat and straight, becomes rocky again at Cape Campolato, and, winding in curves, forms two of the few excellent natural harbours of Sicily, those of Augusta and Syracuse. From Cape Murro di Porco to Cape Passaro the land is still rocky, but fairly even.

To the west of Cape San Marco the cliffs along the coast become lower and disappear altogether after Mazzara del Vallo. From Mazzara del Vallo to Trapani the coast is flat and bordered by vineyards, which slope gradually upwards to the Monti di Gibellina. These vineyards produce the grapes from which Marsala wine is made. The only natural harbours on this western coast are those of Trapani and Marsala, both very inferior to those of the north and east coasts.

The volcanic island of Sicily is, of course, rich in mineral waters. The best-known of these, generally sulphurous or ferruginous, are found at Castroreale in the province of Messina, at Acireale, Paterno, near Catania, Termini Imerese near Palermo, and at Sciacca on the south coast.

Some of the best waves are found around the island thanks to the natural location, and the person will find that since this is an island that they can enjoy some private time on the waves, minus all the tourists and people that will be watching them, something that many surfers are seeking. True, the winter time is not the best time to hit the waves since the water is a bit chilly, and many surfers are not taking to the waves during the summer since the beaches are more crowded. During the fall time is when the extreme surfers come out to play since this is the official hit of the hurricane season and waves that would blow the socks off of anyone. While, spring offers decent surf that the person is going to be able to enjoy.

For those that are new to the area and are surfers that want to be prepared, then they are going to want to make sure that they are bringing quite a few boards with them, the reason is that the waves are something that constantly changes on the island and the person wants to be able to safely surf no matter what the conditions are. With that in mind, surfers will also want to make sure that they are wearing the proper gear for the water temperature to avoid injuring themselves. IN addition, the person will want to make sure that they have all the supplies that they could possibly need for their board as there are no surf shops that are on the island. A person that needs something for their board will have to make the trip back to the main island in order to find a store that will sell this.

Overall, the person will find that Fire Island, known for its beauty, is also one of those secret hidden gems for surfers that want great waves with little interruptions. Every year tons of people enter this island in order to enjoy the surf, and it is a trip that they never forget and a surfing experience that compares to no other out there.

Tears and Joy: Reminiscing My Travel and Work Abroad Encounter

As I mentioned in my earlier post, I travel to numerous places as a result of my occupation as a singer. Traveling could be music to somebody’s ears, however when you should do this for work, there were instances when this left me weary and groggy. Occasionally I had to leave my very own boy and that made me feel empty and miss him much. I found my self feeling homesick incessantly. My maternal instinct started in where there had been days when I would think whether I ought to do something else for a job as an alternative to my present work. I think all parents wants to give all the best things for their kids. This goes the same with me seeing that I am a single mom. In my pursuit to give him the good things that life has to offer, a lot is required from me. Today, quite a few Filipinos I know work abroad to provide for their loved ones as well.

The work that I have has provided me and my kid more than sufficient and this encouraged me to open my own bank account so I may have some funds to run my own business in the event that I already I decide to quit my work. Though I’ve got my share of travel experiences, it’s one thing I wish my child and I shall do together someday as he grows older. One country in Asia I would love to bring him to is Japan. This place holds a lot of history that will definitely fascinate those who wish to find out more about the past. The charming landscape of this place could also take your breath away.

Japan also has a lot of attractions. Many of my buddies who have been itching to look abroad have always desired to tour Japan. This country offers you a special mixture of the west and the east. In addition, there are also many ritzy shops where the best finds abound. Springtime time in Japan is around March to May so I would usually recommend my buddies to visit this wonderful country during this season where flowers are glamorously flourishing. It is also the time when the well-known cherry blossom trees begin to show their beauty — my biggest favorite of this season.

Even Japanese locals themselves enjoy to take a look at their country, specially when they are too pressured with work. Some individuals I’ve worked with in hotels who do not leave for abroad end up traveling around their motherland to find out about historical sites such as the century’s old temple, lakes, museums, mountains, shrines and other tourist attractions. I wasn’t able to experience this though since I’m saving the ideal time when my son has reached the appropriate age to travel abroad. I’m still hopeful to find a person I can travel with.

From what I’ve heard, Kyoto and Osaka are two of probably the most frequented places because aside from their tourist spots, additionally they provide the best accommodation options accompanied by delicious traditional Japanese cuisine, which is something visitors would want taste of. RV parks in Arizona are a common enough occurrence. This is probably because of the wide range of temperatures within a relatively small geographic location. Of course, this is the west, where “small” distances are probably much more vast than in the eastern United States. However, the temperature differences between mountain and desert areas in Arizona are enough to set records.

Of all metropolitan areas in the US, Phoenix has the most days that reach 100 degrees or more (110 days on average) and Flagstaff has nearly the most days that reaches 32 or less among the contiguous 48 states. This national extreme of temperatures exists with less than a two hour drive between them. This difference in temperatures is primarily due to a 4500 foot elevation difference between the two locations. In summer, Flagstaff enjoys temperatures that rarely go above the 90s, and commonly stays comfortably in the 70s and 80s during the day. The rainforest is a sight that everyone should behold first hand at some point in their life. As far as sleeping goes, you’ll spend most of you nights rocking yourself to sleep in a hammock. While the nights can be as warm as the days, sometimes a big of extra warmth will be needed, so it’s a good idea to back a sleeping bag. Down sleeping bags are great for keeping you warm, but aren’t so good when it gets wet. A synthetic sleeping bag on the other hand is bulkier, but if it gets wet (and it probably will) it will still keep you warm.

Other essentials that you will need include sun cream, a well stocked first aid kit and a travel towel. It goes without saying that the rainforest is crawling with insect life as well, so a good quality mosquito repellent is a must.
