The Ancient Egyptian Sites Around Cairo
One of the things that has to be dealt with when visiting Cairo independently is the constant hassle of touts. Still, the freedom to go about as you like is a major advantage of this way of travel – and there are several Ancient Egyptian sights to see in the area where you may well enjoy spending as much time as you like and travel on a budget without being contrived by the often tight schedules or expensive rates of tour groups.
Anyone fascinated with all-things Pharaonic will want to spend long hours at the Egyptian Museum in downtown Cairo. It is replete with treasures and artifacts that date from pre-dynastic eras all the way up to the Greek and Roman times. The location is literally bursting at the seams with statues and objects that belonged to kings and peasants. The highlight of the visit is without a doubt the magnificent funerary treasures of Tutankhamun that were unearthed in the sealed tomb of the Pharaoh in 1922. One can easily spend a few days in the museum and still there would be more to see.
Just south of Cairo are the necropolis of Saqqara and Dashur which house a number of pyramids that should not be overlooked by Egyptology enthusiasts. Most notably, the step pyramid of Djoser is thought to be the earliest real pyramid in Egypt – the stair-like architecture being a precursor to the familiar shape that we know. Not far from there, the remains of Memphis, the capital of the Old Kingdom, does not have much to show today but you can appreciate a colossal statue of Ramses II.
Finally, the Great Pyramids of Giza are, of course, the main attraction in Cairo or anywhere else in Egypt for that matter. The only of the seven ancient wonders of the world to have survived, they stand surprisingly close to the actual city and amaze visitors by their sheer size. The Sphinx, silently sitting nearby guards the complex and by its very existence poses an enigma that has yet to be answered by modern scholars.
